A former acting CEO of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Prof Afia Hesse has been indicted in the 2016 Auditor-General's report for illegally benefiting from a retirement package of GHS51,000 and a VW saloon car.
According to the report, the previous management of the referral hospital awarded the package to Prof Hesse without the approval of the Health Minister.
The Auditor-General said the practice was in breach of Section 37 (6) of the Ghana Health Service Act on retirement packages.
At public hearings of the Public Accounts Committee on Monday, 11 March 2019, the CEO of Korle Bu, Dr Daniel Asare said although the car has been retrieved from Prof Hesse, she has refused to refund the GHS51,000 and challenged them to go to court.
For his part, Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman Manu said the only option left for his ministry is to seek advice from the Attorney General to recover the money.
