‘Aagbe wo’ demo today

Members of the Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty will today, Thursday, 7 February 2019 embark on a peaceful protest dubbed ‘Aagbe wo’, which means: “They are killing us”.

The Coalition said its resolve to embark on the demonstration stems from the violent incident that temporarily disrupted the voting process at La-Bawaleshie during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election on Thursday, 31 January 2019.

National security operatives shot some supporters of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the private residence of the party’s candidate during the poll.

The Coalition explained that the protest is to mount pressure on the government to check the level of insecurity in the country, which they say is threatening Ghana’s democracy.

“We announced our intention to embark on a massive demonstration dubbed ‘Aagbe wo’ demonstration to draw public attention to the looming threat on our democracy, peace and stability as well as to press further our demand for proper and speedy investigations into events of last Thursday’s by-election,” the coalition announced earlier this week”.

Meanwhile, former President John Dramani Mahama has urged supporters of the NDC to fully participate in the demonstration.

In a tweet, Mr Mahama said: “I welcome the initiative of the Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty and I encourage all members of the NDC to participate in tomorrow’s demonstration. Let’s show to the world that we stand for peace and that the violence displayed in AWW has no place in our democracy.”
