The Upper East Regional Storekeeper of the Ghana Education Service (GES) who was caught stealing free uniforms meant for deprived schoolchildren will face the full rigours of the law, Dr Yaw Adutwum, Deputy Minister of Education, has said.

According to him, all persons including officials in the educational sector, who will act in a way to disturb the education of Ghanaian children will be dealt with according to the law.

The suspect is said to have taken a rickshaw rider to the premises of the Upper East Regional Education Directorate in the afternoon and was about to leave the grounds with one hundred packs of the stolen uniforms on board the hired vehicle when some young men accosted him.

When interrogated, he reportedly said the Pusiga District Director of Education, Duncan Nsoh, asked him to bring the uniforms for distribution to some pupils. But when Mr. Nsoh, who was 15 kilometres away attending the Azambene Festival in the Bongo District was called to the scene to ascertain the truth of the matter, he said he never requested any uniforms from the storekeeper.

There was a melee for hours, as a crowd of witnesses, after placing calls to the Bolgatanga police station, tried to hold the storekeeper down amidst resistance from him. To avoid public attention, the suspect retreated into a dilapidated single-storey building as he hurled curses at his accusers while throwing his hands in the air.

Reacting to this on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM hosted by Don Kwabena Prah Jr. (The Don) on Monday October 15, Dr Adutwum said: “I commend the public for being vigilant and raising the alarm. This matter is unfortunate and must not be countenanced.”

“The law will act on this to serve as a deterrent to others who have the idea of also stealing government property and making the education of our children difficult.”
